The new government has set a target of generating 30,000 megawatts of electricity within the next ten years. Two 400 kV transmission lines are planned—one from Humla through Bajhang to Dododhara in Kailali, and another from West Seti (Bajhang), Doti and Dadeldhura to Dododhara in Kailali. An inter-country transmission line is also under construction to bring electricity from projects such as Phukot Karnali, Upper Karnali, West Seti and SR6 to Dododhara and connect it to Bareilly in India, Shrestha said. There is currently only one transmission line in operation in the Far-West to transmit electricity from both private and government projects. Apart from the 132 kV transmission line from Balach in Darchula to Attariya in Kailali, no other transmission lines have even begun construction.

China, Brazil, Canada, the United States, and Russia are the five largest producers of hydropower. The world’s largest hydroelectric plant in terms of installed capacity is Three Gorges (Sanxia) on China’s Yangtze River, which is 1.4 miles (2.3 kilometers) wide and 607 feet (185 meters) high. The facility that actually generates the most electricity annually is the Itaipu plant situated on the Paraná River between Brazil and Paraguay. The amount of electricity that can be generated depends on how far the water drops and how much water moves through the system. The electricity can be transported through long-distance electric lines to homes, factories, and businesses. Other types of hydropower plants make use of the flow through a waterway without a dam.
U.S. Bureau of Reclamation April 2026 24-Month Study
Across the country, hydropower generation declined 15.02% compared to 2023, with a further 34.3% drop in January 2025 due to extremely low river inflows. Most pumped-storage hydroelectricity systems use more electricity to pump water to upper water storage reservoirs than they produce with stored water. Therefore, most pumped-storage facilities have net negative annual electricity generation balances. Once a dam has been built and the equipment installed, the energy source—flowing water—is free.
The long-awaited hydropower line delivering electricity from Québec to New England is expected to be running in January after years of hurdles and delays, the company Hydro Québec stated. The surge in demand has been driven by rapid housing construction and the launch of new industrial facilities. With Kyrgyzstan’s population now exceeding 7.4 million, the number of electricity consumers is expanding steadily. Over the past three years alone, 4,192 industrial facilities and 96,975 households have been connected to the national grid, according to the Energy Ministry.
Analysis & Projections
Because hydroelectricity generation depends on precipitation, and precipitation levels vary seasonally and annually, the ranking of each state in annual hydroelectricity generation may be different from its ranking in generation capacity. South Africa supports expansion of PSH to enhance grid stability and integrate renewable energy. Eskom, the national utility company, operates existing PSH schemes and is developing other projects, a priority under the Infrastructure South Africa Programme. The country has integrated https://thecolumbianews.net/why-electric-boats-are-the-future-of-sustainable-boating.html PS into its renewable energy strategy, aiming for 52% of electricity generation from renewables by 2030. The country has significant potential for small and micro run-of-river projects and pumped storage. Singapore is strengthening its energy strategy by importing regional hydropower and expanding grid infrastructure.
Hydropower Data & Studies
- The benefits of hydropower have been recognized and harnessed for thousands of years.
- Similarly, Janak Raj Giri, elected from Bajura-1, said that the government should take initiative to move forward the 1,902 megawatt Phukot Karnali project in the coming fiscal year.
- OTEC systems using seawater as the working fluid produce desalinated water through the condensation process.
- The El Menzel PSH plant near Séfrou is one of the most significant projects in Africa’s pipeline.
- Iran’s Minister of Energy, Dr Abbas Aliabadi, has called for the accelerated implementation of pumped storage projects, although limited policy progress has been made to date.
Iberdrola’s Valdecañas project (275MW / 210GWh) secured administrative approval in July and has already commissioned its first pumping unit. The project uses existing infrastructure and includes a 15MW / 7.5MWh chemical battery to enhance flexibility. Tendering of the 95MW Hvammur greenfield HEP is under way and commissioning is expected in 2030. Tendering of the expansion of the Sigalda project is also ongoing, where one 65MW turbine will be added to increase flexibility, with commissioning expected by end-2028.
Support plant modernisation to maximise hydropower’s flexibility capabilities
The company filed mandatory regulatory disclosure with BSE and NSE on April 17, 2026, complying with SEBI regulations. Company Secretary Shobha Shetty signed the official notification confirming Mr. Parmar’s cessation as Director upon completion of his term. The AGM determined board members’ allowances and authorized the board to explore and invest in new projects. It also approved amendments to the company’s memorandum and articles of association.
In addition, hydropower is flexible enough to integrate increasing amounts of wind and solar onto the grid. That flexibility allows it to quickly provide dispatchable generation to balance the minute-by-minute electricity generation variations caused by cloud cover, wind gusts, or fuel-supply disruptions from non-renewable resources. Kyrgyzstan plans to significantly expand its hydropower capacity by commissioning new hydroelectric power plants with a combined capacity of 81 megawatts and expected annual generation of 348.3 million kWh, according to the Ministry of Energy. On April 20, two new small hydroelectric power plants (HPPs) were commissioned in the country’s northern Chui region. The Sokuluk-3 HPP has a capacity of 9.5 MW, while the Tuyuk HPP has a capacity of 5.9 MW.
- Such growth would help generate some 600,000 skilled jobs over the coming decade and to double hydropower capacity by 2050, a cumulative investment of approximately US$3.7 trillion is required, or about US$130 billion annually.
- The energy available from the moving water depends on both the volume of the water flow and the change in elevation—also known as the head—from one point to another.
- Despite long being used as an energy source, the potential for hydropower as part of energy diversification efforts has been greatly overlooked.
- In July 2024, the Senate approved the Law on Electric Power industry and the ADB approved $400 million for policy reforms to the market-led power sector.
Hydropower, or hydroelectric power, is one of the oldest and largest sources of renewable energy. There are about 1,450 conventional and 40 pumped-storage hydropower plants operating in the United States. The oldest operating U.S. hydropower facility is the Whiting plant in Whiting, Wisconsin, which started operating in 1891 and has a total generation capacity of about 4 megawatts (MW). Most U.S. hydroelectricity is produced at large dams on major rivers, and most of these hydroelectric dams were built before the mid-1970s by federal government agencies. The largest U.S. hydropower facility, and the largest U.S. electric power plant in electric generation capacity, is the Grand Coulee hydro dam on the Columbia River in Washington State, with 6,765 MW total generation capacity.

Of this general public issue, 10%, a total of 94,000 unit shares, were allotted for the Nepalese citizens working abroad. Of the general public issue, 2%, i.e., 18,800 units, have been set aside for the company’s employees, and 5% of the total offered shares, i.e., 47,000 units, have been reserved for mutual funds. She further added that with ongoing work at the Arun-3 Hydropower project located just 35 kilometers from the Lower Arun site, the company is well-positioned to deliver world-class engineering and timely execution. Patel Engineering has been declared the lowest bidder (L1) for Package 2 of the 669 MW Lower Arun Hydropower Project in Nepal, valued at ₹1,593.08 crores. The company announced this significant contract win through a regulatory filing under Regulation 30 of SEBI Listing Regulations.
When hydropower plants are years old, major modernisation and refurbishment are required to maintain or improve their performance and increase their flexibility. Many new hydropower plants are currently under construction, and we are also modernizing existing plants using new technologies,” Ibraev told The Times of Central Asia. By 2030, projects including the Upper Tatay pumped storage hydropower station are expected to further lift Cambodia’s renewable capacity to over 70% of the country’s total energy mix.
